Mental Health covered under Insurance?

Heads up: The Trump administration is about to decide if they’ll keep or scrap the rule that makes insurance companies cover mental health and addiction treatment the same way they cover stuff like cancer or heart disease. If they ditch it, that means it could get way harder-and a lot more expensive-for people to get help for depression, anxiety, or substance abuse.

This isn’t just some policy thing for me-I use mental health resources through my insurance, and losing this would be a huge blow. If they cut these protections, a lot of us would be stuck paying out of pocket, or just going without care. These are resources so many people rely on, and taking them away is honestly the last thing we need right now.

You’re Fired…reason unknown

The Librarian of Congress was fired, and honestly, there hasn’t been a clear reason given. Carla Hayden, who had been in the role since 2016, got an email from the White House basically saying she was out, but it didn’t explain why. No official statement or cause was provided.

From what’s being reported, it looks like this is part of a bigger effort by Trump’s administration to remove federal employees they don’t see as loyal or supportive enough. So, it seems more political than anything else, but officially, no specific reason for her firing has been made public.

Newark and FAA

There was another FAA outage this morning (May 9, 2025). Air traffic controllers at the Philly facility lost radar and radio for about 90 seconds, so planes around Newark were basically flying blind. This is the second time in two weeks, and it’s causing a mess with delays and cancellations-especially for United flights.

Pete Buttigieg actually asked Congress for more funding (2 May 2024, for $26.8B) to fix the FAA’s ancient tech and hire more controllers, but Republicans in the House blocked it. Now the FAA is scrambling to patch things up with backup systems and tech upgrades, but the system clearly needs a full overhaul. Lawmakers are finally talking about more funding, but for now, it’s just more headaches for travelers while the blame game continues.  To be clear, this was not nor is it Biden’s fault.

More Newark News…this time the Mayor

Newark’s mayor, Ras Baraka, just got arrested outside the ICE detention center today. He was there protesting the reopening of the place and standing with members of Congress who wanted to check it out. The facility’s been super controversial, and the city is actually suing the private company running it, saying it opened without proper permits or inspections.

Baraka was told to leave by Homeland Security, but he refused, so they arrested him for trespassing. The whole thing went down in front of a crowd of protesters and federal agents. Baraka’s been really outspoken against this facility and the way it’s being run, so this is definitely making headlines.

Approval Ratings

Trump’s approval ratings are sliding right now. Latest polls have him at around 40-48% approval, with more people disapproving than approving. Even in states he won like Texas and Florida, his numbers are dropping-mostly because of the economy and those new tariffs.

He started his second term with a lot more support, but that “honeymoon phase” is definitely over. People are feeling the pinch, and it’s showing up in the polls.

Trump’s approval is down, and the frustration is growing.

Head’s Up – Russian Satellite

that old Russian satellite, Kosmos 482, is finally crashing back to Earth today or early tomorrow (May 9 or 10). It was launched in 1972 to go to Venus, but a rocket glitch left it stuck in Earth’s orbit for 50+ years.

Now it’s coming down, but nobody knows exactly where-it could land anywhere between Canada and Australia, over land or ocean. Most of it will burn up, but a few pieces might survive.

No worries about toxic fuel or anything dangerous on board. Tracking is tricky because the orbit and atmosphere are unpredictable, so we’ll only know where it lands after the fact. Risk to people is super low. But if it does damage something…I’m sure it’s Biden’s fault. ;)

Turk is being released!

A federal judge has ordered the immediate release of Rumeysa Ozturk, the Turkish student from Tufts University who was detained by U.S. immigration officials. The judge said on Friday that she should be released right away and did not put any travel restrictions on her, so she can go wherever she needs-including back to Vermont or Massachusetts for her studies. The judge criticized the government's case against her, noting that the only evidence was an editorial she co-authored criticizing Israel’s military actions, and said her ongoing detention was suppressing free speech for non-citizens. Ozturk’s arrest had sparked nationwide protests, and the judge made it clear he would reject any attempts to block her release.

Where is Garcia?

Garcia is still stuck in a prison in El Salvador, even though a U.S. judge said he never should’ve been deported in the first place. His lawyers say they have no clue what the government is actually doing to get him back, and now the Trump administration is trying to keep everything secret by claiming “state secrets privilege.”

The next court date is May 16, when the judge will decide if the government has to be more transparent or if they can keep hiding what’s going on. For now, Garcia’s family is still waiting, and there’s a lot of frustration over the lack of answers. Stay tuned.
