Iran Update

Here’s the lay of the land right now: Iran is getting hammered from the air, civilians are still getting shoved out of their homes by the millions, and Trump is flailing between begging allies in private and chestthumping “we don’t need anybody” online while NATO and pretty much everyone else slowwalk or outright refuse to jump into his mess.

Who was bombed in the last 24 hours

In the last day, USIsraeli strikes have hit multiple major Iranian cities and strategic sites, not just a single “surgical” target. Tehran, Isfahan, Bandar Abbas, Karaj, Shiraz, Tabriz, and Kermanshah have all been under waves of attack, including intelligence and Revolutionary Guard Navy headquarters in Tehran and other military and security facilities.

Israel is bragging that it killed Ali Larijani, effectively Iran’s top security boss and one of the most powerful people in the regime, along with Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani in separate strikes.  On top of that, Iran is lashing out across the region: nearly 100 drones toward Saudi Arabia in 24 hours, a drone that set off a massive fire at an oil hub in the UAE, and missiles and drones targeting places that host US bases.

How many people are displaced so far

The human fallout is already obscene. The UN is saying around 3.2 million people have been displaced just inside Iran since the USIsrael bombing started in late February, mostly families fleeing Tehran and other cities toward rural and northern areas.

The same war that’s smashing Iran is also hitting Lebanon, and there UNHCR puts new displacement at roughly 767,700 people in Iran and Lebanon combined, including more than 667,000 who have had to leave their homes in Lebanon alone.  That’s on top of more than 14 million people in the wider region who were already refugees and are now even more screwed by this new round of airstrikes, border tightening, and economic chaos.

Trump’s Oval Office word salad

Yesterday’s Oval Office performance was exactly what you’d expect from Trump in full “I started a war and now I’m improvising” mode. He tried to package the bombing as some grand “rescue mission” for the Iranian people, recycling the same lines he’s used before about freeing Iran from its government while openly warning that Americans are going to die because of what he ordered.

The messaging is all over the place: he talks about “unconditional surrender” for Iran, then promises that after they submit and choose a “GREAT & ACCEPTABLE” new leadership, he and “our wonderful allies” will magically make Iran “bigger, better and stronger” and literally coins “MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN.”  It’s classic Trump word soup: a mix of threats, promises, and branding slogans that sound more like a rally hat than a war policy.

Allies: he begged, they balked, and now it’s “we need nobody”

Behind the scenes and in some of his earlier posts, Trump has basically been leaning on allies to come help him police the Strait of Hormuz and back his bombing campaign. He talked up “many countries” supposedly sending warships with the US to keep the strait open and safe, clearly trying to suggest a big coalition standing behind him.

Reality check: NATO governments are at best “disappointed” with him, at worst openly refusing to expand their role in this war, and European leaders are not rushing to deepen their involvement after years of getting insulted, shaken down on defense spending, and ignored on diplomacy.  That’s why his latest turn is to lash out and claim the US “no longer needs” help from NATO and other allies on Iran, basically pretending he chose to go it alone instead of admitting they’re ghosting him.

Today he’s on Truth Social doing his toughguy routine, pivoting from “come help us keep the Strait open” to “we need NOBODY’s help” and bragging that the US can crush Iran’s military on its own.  It reads like a guy who didn’t get what he wanted in private, so now he’s rageposting for the base, trying to spin abandonment as strength.

Joe Kent Resignation

Trump’s own handpicked intel pit bull just tapped out, and that says everything. Joe Kent, the hardcore, MAGAashell director of the National Counterterrorism Center, resigned today and flatout said Iran never posed an “imminent threat” to the United States and that this war was pushed by Israel and its lobby, not by actual intel that justified dragging us into another Middle East disaster.

This guy is not some squish or Never Trumper — he was elevated precisely because he parroted Trump’s election lies, ran with farright conspiracies, and was embraced by the MAGA crowd as one of their own, and he’s now saying he “cannot in good conscience” support Trump’s Iran war.  When your lead intel guy, who was hired for his loyalty and redmeat politics, walks out the door calling the whole justification a lie and comparing it to how we were sold previous catastrophic wars, that’s not a minor disagreement, that’s blowing the whistle from inside the machine.

Is this a wakeup call for MAGA? It should be, but right now it’s splitting the movement instead of flipping it. You’ve got some of the rightwing media ecosystem — people like Megyn Kelly, Tucker, and a bunch of podcasters who helped juice Trump’s 2024 run — openly saying this Iran war is a con and that the threat was oversold, but the base in the polls is still mostly riding with Trump and the bombs, with big majorities of selfidentified MAGA Republicans backing the strikes.  So we’re in this messedup place where the most pluggedin, ultrared insiders and even a few grownups in Congress are basically yelling, “There was no imminent threat, this was a choice,” while the loudest part of the movement shrugs and cheers anyway because Trump wrapped it in “strength” and “America First.”

MAGA Mike’s Press Conference This AM

MAGA Mike got up there this morning and did what he always does: wrapped Trump’s Iran war in God, flag, and fear, and hoped nobody would notice the facts have completely blown up in his face.

He’s out there denying reality on Joe Kent, acting like the guy just didn’t see the “real” intel, insisting there was a “clear imminent threat” from Iran, and claiming that if Trump hadn’t greenlit this war when he did, we’d be looking at mass American casualties and wrecked bases — all while the Pentagon has already told Congress they saw no sign Iran was about to hit us first and Kent himself, who ran the damn counterterror shop, says there was no imminent threat.

He also tried to sell this whole thing as some tight, “necessary, lawful, effective” little mission that’s basically “virtually accomplished,” not a war — even though Trump and his own defense secretary are literally calling it a war and we’re bombing half of Iran’s command structure while millions of civilians run for their lives.  Same guy is pushing a clean extension of surveillance powers and talking about “exquisite intelligence” and “peace through strength,” which is code for “trust us, don’t ask questions, and definitely don’t connect this to how we were lied into previous wars.”

He is selling the usual package: pretend the intel says what it doesn’t, pretend the war is smaller than it is, demonize anyone who breaks ranks — even a hardcore MAGA intel chief — and hope the base hears “imminent threat” and “protecting Americans” loud enough that they stop asking why the story keeps changing.

DOJ…My Cousin Vinny

This is exactly how you end up with a My Cousin Vinny DOJ. The department has literally suspended its longstanding rule that new federal prosecutors need at least a year of experience, saying there’s an “exigent hiring need” because they’re so shortstaffed they have to start scooping people straight out of law school and throwing them into federal court.

Is it because people are quitting? Yeah, that’s a huge part of it — we’ve got thousands of DOJ employees gone since Trump came back, waves of career folks pushed out or walking away, major national security and Iranrelated units losing half their prosecutors, entire sections hollowed out by purges of anyone seen as “disloyal.”  The exact “8k lawyers” number floating around is more pundit shorthand than confirmed headcount, but the direction is dead on: mass exits, including huge chunks of the units that defend Trump’s policies and handle counterterror and Iran cases, have left skeleton crews and forced DOJ to relax standards just to keep the lights on.

So now, instead of a deep bench of experienced, nonpartisan prosecutors, Trump and Pam Bondi are rebuilding the place with baby lawyers who know they owe their job to this regime and with political appointees who will happily do whatever it takes to justify his Iran war and his domestic power grabs.   That’s how you “destroy” a legal system without passing a single law: drive out the people who know what they’re doing, gut the professional culture, then lower the bar so far that anyone who’s loyal enough gets to call themselves a federal prosecutor.

Epstein…don’t look away

The war is horrific and it’s exactly the kind of chaos people in power count on to bury the Epstein rot, which is why we absolutely cannot look away from this. In the last 24 hours, House Oversight formally subpoenaed Trump’s Attorney General Pam Bondi to answer for how DOJ has slowwalked, redacted, and generally played games with the millions of Epstein files they were forced by law to release, and watchdogs are now in court asking a judge to force even more documents and internal records into the light before she sneaks into a closeddoor deposition next month (April 14th).

We’ve already got over 3 million pages, videos, images — a mountain of material that shows how deep Epstein’s network went into politics, finance, royalty, and media — and still DOJ under Bondi has dragged its feet, missed deadlines, overredacted, and allegedly yanked things back from public view, which is why the committee and outside groups are turning the screws right now.  This is the playbook: flood us with crisis — war in Iran, attacks, markets swinging, Trump screaming on Truth Social — and hope people stop paying attention to the quiet but massive fight over who gets named, who gets protected, and whether the sextrafficking machine that Epstein and Maxwell were part of ever really gets exposed or just filed away as “old news.”

If we let the horror of this war become the main show and forget that the same DOJ now being rebuilt by Trump and Bondi is sitting on the Epstein pipeline of blackmail, money, and power, then yeah, we’ve walked straight into the trap they set: stare at the bombs, ignore the files, let the rich and connected ride this out untouched. The only way that doesn’t happen is if we keep both in frame at the same time — what Trump is doing abroad and what his people are trying to bury at home — and refuse to let “Epstein” become just a conspiracy buzzword instead of what it actually is: evidence of how our entire system protects predators when they’re wealthy enough to buy cover.
