Memphis Task Force Update

Trump is pounding the “law and order” drum harder than ever, launching his Memphis Safe Task Force—basically dropping the Memphis version of last month’s Washington D.C. clampdown. He signed a new order today, shipping in the National Guard, ICE, DHS, and basically every federal badge he can to “clean up” the city, even as actual crime stats in Memphis have been dropping this year. He’s also hinting that Chicago, St. Louis, and New Orleans are next, trying to hype up “urban crime” as the big 2025 GOP issue. Civil rights folks and Dems are flipping out—calling it nothing but election theater.

“War on Drugs”

The White House announced today that the U.S. military hit another boat in international waters, claiming it was hauling drugs up from Venezuela. Three people on board were killed—making this the second deadly strike in less than two weeks. Trump and his people are putting out videos of hijacked speedboats going up in flames and bragging about “cartel terrorists” being taken out before they can hit the U.S.

This is a new level for American policy; instead of sticking with Coast Guard busts and seizures, we’re talking straight-up military strikes miles off the coast. The first attack earlier this month killed eleven. Both times, the administration claims the boats were loaded with dope and run by the Tren de Aragua gang, which the State Department now calls a “narco-terrorist” group. The president keeps saying these actions are about keeping fentanyl and cocaine out and preventing “attacks on Americans”—playing up the menace as an existential, not just criminal, threat.

But here’s where things get dicey: Trump’s crew hasn’t coughed up any real hard evidence that these boats were actually loaded with drugs when they got blown away. Venezuelan president Maduro’s crying foul, dragging out the “U.S. aggression” card, calling the strike a violation of international law, and accusing the administration of trying to bully his regime. Meanwhile, legal experts are openly wondering if these strikes even pass the sniff test—no prior warnings, deadly force in international waters, no indictments, just vaporizing presumed traffickers on the say-so of a social media video.

Long story short, Team Trump is going all-in on the “narco-terror” narrative, showing off American firepower for the campaign trail, escalating with zero appetite for nuance, scrutiny, or follow-up. And if these first two strikes are any indication, this looks like just the warm-up lap in a new “war on drugs” that’s way more literal than before.

Kirk Update

The MAGA movement is still in shock (frankly, we all are) and pushing the narrative that Kirk was “assassinated for his beliefs.” House Speaker Mike Johnson led a prayer vigil at the Capitol—a real show of force from the GOP, with most Republicans there and only a sprinkle of Democrats showing up. Johnson called Kirk’s killing an attack not just on a person but on “traditional values” and free speech, pushing hard on the “political violence” story. There’s even talk of a Kirk statue in the Capitol. Everyone’s working overtime to cement Kirk as a martyr for the movement.

JD Vance—the self-styled unifier—hosted a special episode of Kirk’s show today from the White House, openly saying that “finding unity” with those who even hint at celebrating Kirk’s death is impossible. He dragged left-wing “lunatics” and called for accountability, setting the tone for a new crackdown. Vance, who flew Kirk’s remains back to Arizona on Air Force Two, got emotional on air about how close they were, and the whole show doubled as a warning shot about “ideologies that led to this.”

On the legal front, details are coming out fast. Police say they’ve got DNA from the crime scene that ties Tyler Robinson, 22, to the murder. The FBI found a note on him and is calling the attack “ideologically motivated,” with claims Robinson was obsessed with Kirk but had become “radicalized” in recent years and hated him. Investigators raided his home, and with federal and state prosecutors huddling up, charges are set to drop as early as tomorrow. Right now, Robinson is under suicide watch in jail, and the story’s spinning up hard with everything from “leftist terrorism” to warnings about “radicalized youth” on obscure forums.

In true MAGA fashion, the base is lighting up social media, going nuclear on anyone skeptical of Kirk’s “martyr” status or too slow to condemn Robinson. Free speech debates are boiling over, with the right pushing for even harsher laws against “incitement” and zero tolerance for violent rhetoric, especially from the left. The Trump camp is already telegraphing plans to turn this into a campaign rallying cry: “We won’t let them silence us.”

Honestly, I’ve witnessed so much disturbing stuff from every direction—it’s just heartbreaking to see, hear, or even be aware of. What happened was horrific and completely unjustified. What makes it worse is how it’s now being used as a political tool, which is exactly what we don’t need right now. And to be real, it’s the right that’s doing this way more than anyone else.

Ukraine/Russia Update

The GOP is starting to break rank, with more Republicans saying out loud what’s been whispered for a while: Putin is playing Trump like a fiddle, and the party’s patience is wearing thin. While Ukrainian forces are taking credit for blowing up Russian supply lines and striking inside Russian territory, Russia’s turning up the heat with fresh military drills with Belarus and drones flying over NATO airspace, which has everybody’s nerves shot. Meanwhile, most of Europe is holding the line with Ukraine, ramping up air defenses and pushing for more sanctions on Moscow, even as Russia threatens retaliation if Europe tries to seize its frozen assets.

Here’s where the GOP shift comes into play. Republican senators and even House Speaker Mike Johnson are calling on Trump to go harder on Russia with new sanctions. Lindsey Graham is scheming to tie sanctions to essential government bills, and guys like Thom Tillis are flat-out saying what everyone sees: Putin is playing Trump for a sucker, milking every meeting for a photo op, delaying any real consequences, and constantly testing western resolve. A lot of these same lawmakers are using “weak” and “inconsistent” to describe Trump’s Russia game.

But Trump himself? He’s sticking to this whole “I’ll only sanction Russia if NATO stops buying Russian oil first” line and keeps talking about how he’s the only guy who can personally broker peace. He even floats the idea that he’ll have to “do all the talking” in joint talks between Zelenskyy and Putin because their hatred runs so deep. But every time Russia steps up aggression, Trump hesitates—he’ll slap tariffs on India or tweet warnings, but refuses to lead the charge or show teeth against Putin unless everyone else acts first. Everyone but Trump seems to realize he’s being strung along, and that stance is becoming more isolated by the day as his party grows more impatient and hawkish.

It’s plain to see: Trump keeps getting played, and in the halls of power, he’s the only one who hasn’t figured it out—or maybe just refuses to admit it.

Sorry I’m slow to post—traveling for work this week, so I’ll probably be late with updates until at least Wednesday. Honestly, it actually feels like good timing to be away from the constant flood of breaking news. Everything’s just been too much, too fast, always dialed up to eleven. A little distance might be exactly what I need right now.
